BEAUTY TIPS
Skincare for this hot, hot summer!
Your skin is your shield against the
environment. When excessive temperatures threaten to
overheat your body, your skin protects the delicate
inner organs and maintains a steady body temperature.
However, in the process it bears the brunt of the heat
and gets sunburned, tanned, wrinkled, blemished or
damaged. Learning to protect your skin in summer is thus
very important!
~ Hygiene
Half of summer-related
skin infections would not occur if people maintained
proper hygiene. Shower at least twice a day to prevent
build-up of dried salts and sweat-induced bacterial
growth. Do not over-use anti-perspirants as they not
only clog pores but inhibit sweating, which is necessary
to cool the body and eliminate toxins. Instead, use
loose talc to absorb excess secreted sweat. Never spray
deos on broken, irritated or sunburned skin. If you see
a ringworm infection (circular red patches on the body
that itch intensely), yeast infections (whitish
macerated itchy skin, especially in boldily folds like
the groin) or athlete's foot, consult your dermatologist
immediately.
~ Sun protection
Second to moisturiser,
sunscreens are the most ubiquitously used skincare
product -- and also the most incorrectly used! Each
brand contains different ingredients -- some are
UBA-blocking agents, some for UVB, some are chemical
sunblocks and others (like zinc oxide or titanium
dioxide) are physical sunblocks ie they form an opaque
barrier against the penetration of UV rays.
Take help from a qualified
skin specialist to choose the right sunscreen for you.
Apply at least 10 to 15 minutes before sun exposure and
always use generously. Being stingy with your sunscreen
can drop its effectiveness by half! A 5-rupee coin sized
blob is enough for your face; double that quantity for
each arm. Re-apply every 2-3 hours. For swimming or the
beach, use a waterproof sunblock and reapply each time
you towel yourself dry. Sunscreens can protect from
sunburns, blemishes and skin aging due to UV exposure,
but do not completely prevent a tan. Physically blocking
the sun with an umbrella, a wide-rimmed hat and
sunglasses will prevent tanning.
~ Antioxidants (the internal sun
protectors)
Oxidative damage by ultraviolet
radiation can be mitigated by adequate intake of
antioxidants. You can take them naturally in fresh
salads and brightly-coloured fruit. Mangoes in this
season and papayas are rich in carotene, sweet limes and
lemons are packed with Vitamin C and iced tea is rich in
flavonoids -- all excellent sources of antioxidants. If
'rabbit food' is not your thing, ask your doctor to
prescribe some antioxidant capsules for you.
~ Moisturisers
Sweating makes us forget
just how much we need moisturisers. Heat saps moisture
from the skin, leaving it dry and rough. You must use
light, water-based moisturisers instead of oily ones
each time you wash your face. Drink two-three litres of
water daily to stay well-hydrated.
1) Shield your face from the pollutants
by using a moisturizer or foundation, which provides a
protective layer. (Many sunscreens offer this additional
benefit.)
2) Tap foundation on with sponge or
finger. Your skin will look luminous, yet natural.
3) After your make-up application, take
apart a tissue, and pat over your face. It blends the
makeup together while softening the look.
4) A good cleansing of a very oily skin
is a very effective measure in combating blackheads. A
good cleanser for oily skin prone to blackheads is 1/2
cup of shavings of baby soap, 1/4 cup makai ka atta and
1/4 cup ground almonds. Put them in a container and use
daily.
5) Eight parts water to one part vinegar
and’ you can use straight from the bottle. It makes the
hair soft full of lights and really shiny.
6) Dry nails can flake and cause ridges
along the edges. Oil the nails with olive oil regularly
and liberally daily before going to bed to avoid this.
Brittle and split nails can be cured by including
Calcium and Brewers yeast in your diet. 1 tablespoon of
gelatin dissolved in fruit juice, milk or tea if taken
daily is an excellent cure for brittle nails. Another
good nail strengthener is lime juice.
7) Storing make-up, especially lipstick
is of importance because lipsticks are affected by heat
and moisture. During hot weather put all lipsticks in a
plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator. At
moderate temperatures, the lipstick can be stored in the
dresser.
8) Clean make-up brushes at least twice
a month by washing them with warm soapy water to which a
few drops of antiseptic have been added. Rinse and wipe
clean with a towel or tissue. Dry thoroughly before
reusing them.
9) Looking down into the mirror, apply
the mascara lash as closely as possible to natural lash
line and centrally on the eyelid. Loosen grip with
tweezers and use tweezers to place inner and outer
corner of lash in position. Draw a thin eyeline over
base of lashes with eyeliner to hide lash base.
10) Thick lips: They can be made to look
thinner by painting them within the natural lipline and
covering the remaining area with the foundation
cream.
Fragrance and
Aging
Do the age
gracefully. One should avoid everything that has
the fragrance or lotions of coconut oil and orange. The
reason is that these perfumes contain a substance called
psoralen that is known to speed up the aging
process.
Hair care
Degrease oily hair with witch hazel when if
there is no time to do shampoo. Apply to roots with a
cotton ball. To help reduce dandruff, add 30 plain
aspirin to a full bottle of regular shampoo. Apply and
rinse as normal.
Lip
Care Mix one-tablespoon
cranberry sauce juice and two tablespoons Vaseline for a
delicious home made lip balm. Now apply the juice of
lemon skin for avoiding black colour of the lips.
Massage lips with coriander leaf juice for soft and rosy
lips.
Palm
Care
For rough
palms, use a mixture of glycerin and limejuice in equal
proportion. Remove scars on hands and feet by
rubbing them with lemon
peel.
Sunscreen
The majority of people know that sunscreen
is vital for shoulders, backs, legs, and arms when out
in the sun but there are other parts of the body that
are often unnoticed. When taking pleasure in the
beautiful sun, be sure to use sunscreen on ears, slips
and even the tops of feet as well.
Cleansing
Before using make up, face should be very
well clean. Dust, grease, perspiration, dirt and
bacteria are not detached from ordinary washing. For
this, cleansing creams are required. They go deeper into
the pores and eliminate them thoroughly and clean the
face. Before applying cleansing cream make sure hairs do
not stick to the face. Apply cream in small amount on
cheeks, chin, neck and forehead. Massage it softly by
moving palms little upward and downward, by paying
appropriate attention to the creases of the nose, under
the chin area, neck and ear lobes. Rub these small areas
using fingers. Use the moist cotton and remove the
cream. Use of dry cotton must be avoided as it absorbs
moisture from the skin.
Method of conditioning:
- Remove the excess water from hair
after shampooing your hair.
- Then remove tangles from hair by
combing.
- Rub the conditioner with your fingers
on hairs.
- Keep it for five minutes.
- Massage gently.
- Rinse the hair to remove the
conditioner
